Derby Odds Dominated by Irish Runners
June 4, 2009
The odds for the 2009 Investec Derby are dominated by Irish trained horses, with the top six in the betting heading across the Irish Sea for a tilt at the second of English Classics and a share of the £1.25 million on offer.
The favourite for the race is Newmarket’s 2000 Guineas winner, Sea the Stars at 11/4 with the long time favourite and unbeaten Aidan O’Brien runner, Fame and Glory, now a 4/1 shot to win the race with William Hill after O’Brien’s stable jockey, Johnny Murtagh, opted to ride Rip van Winkle when the final declarations were made on Thursday. Fame and Glory should not be written off though as this son of Montjeu was the impressive winner of the Derrinstown Stud Stakes at Leopardstown in May, a trial synonymous with producing Derby winners; including Sinndar, Galileo and High Chaparral since the year 2000 and is the pick of no fewer than nine Aidan O’Brien trained runners in the race, who is clearly eager to add a third Derby win to his name following a seven year spell without a winner in the race.
William Hill 2oo9 Epsom Derby Odds
Sea the Stars 11/4
Fame and Glory 4/1
Rip Van Winkle 4/1
Gran Amhras 15/2
Black Bear Island 8/1
Masterofthehorse 14/1
Kite Wood 25/1
Age of Aquarius 22/1
Crowded House 20/1
Golden Sword 40/1
South Easter 50/1
Montaff 50/1
Debussy 66/1
Sea the Stars is now th favourite at 10/3 and could well contest favouritism with bookmakers by the start of the race at 3:45 on Saturday 6th June. Trained by John Oxx, Sea the Stars is bidding to be the first horse since Nashwan in 1989 to win both the 2,000 Guineas and Epsom Derby and if reports from the County Kildare stable are to be believed, he should have an outstanding chance. Rip Van Winkle finished fourth, 2 1/2 lengths behind Sea the Stars in the Guineas last month and is another leading contender from the O’Brien contingent. The son on 2001 Derby winner, Galileo, Rip Van Winkle was always going to appreciate the 1 mile 4 furlong Derby trip as opposed to the mile trip of the 2,000 Guineas and could well be capable of reversing the form with the John Oxx trained Colt.
Gran Amhras is another Colt by Galileo (one of seven in the 2009 Derby) that is expected to improve for the step up in trip and represents last year’s Derby winning trainer, Jim Bolger. Whilst the Aidan O’Brien duo, Masterofthehorse and Black Bear Island, complete the leading fancies for this year’s Derby with Godolphin’s Kite Wood the first English trained runner in the betting, available at odds of 25/1.
At first glance, the 2009 Derby looks a very competitive race and you can’t expect anything less for a Group One Classic. The fact that Aidan O’Brien has so many runners entered suggests that he could be unsure himself of which of his entries is capable of winning the race but in Sea the Stars, we could well have a potential superstar in the midst and it would be a brave person to oppose this one and he forms our Derby tip.

English Trained Fillies Head the Epsom Oaks Betting
June 1, 2009
A quartet of English trained Fillies head the betting for Friday’s Investec Oaks at Epsom Downs Racecourse, in what promises to be a great race with the Michael Bell trained Sariska the market leader at odds of 5/2 with Ladbrokes. She won the Musidora Stakes at York in May in impressive fashion, staying on strongly to suggest that the 1 mile 4 furlongs around Epsom shouldn’t be a problem and has been shortening in the betting ever since.
Rainbow View is the second favourite for the race and the John Gosden trained Filly disappointed when finishing 5th in the 1,000 Guineas as the odds on favourite. This is the first time she has been seen since that run and based on her two year old form, she is clearly not short of ability and the step up in trip and more prefferred going at Epsom may show her in a better light.
Ladbrokes Epsom Oaks Odds
Sariska 5/2
Rainbow View 3/1
Midday 4/1
Phillipina 8/1
Perfect Truth 7/1
Oh Goodness Me 14/1
Three Moons 20/1
High Heeled 25/1
Wadaat 40/1
The Miniver Rose 33/1
Nashmiah 40/1
Tottie 100/1

Midday is one of the more interesting runners in the race, trained by Henry Cecil, who has won this race a total of eight time in the past 25 years years. Based on this stat alone, the 4/1 about Midday represents great value for a yard who win this race on average, once every three years. Her from isn’t bad either, having won the Lingfield Oaks Trial last time out, a race that has produced three oaks winners in the past 15 years and last year’s Oaks winner finsihed second in the same trial.
Phillipina and Perfect Truth make up the leading contenders (8/1 and 7/1 respectively) and the two were inseperable when they met in the Cheshire Oaks in May, with Perfect Truth getting the better of the Sir Michael Stoute runner by a short head. Phillipina has yet to win a race and it looks a tough assignment in a race like the Oaks to lose her Maiden tag , whilst Perfect Turth represents the best Irish hope in the race and the Aidan O’Brien runner should not be ruled out with her pedigree (Daughter of Derby winner, Galileo) suggesting that she will relish the stamina testing trip around Epsom.

Man Utd can Clinch the Title with a Draw at Home to Arsenal
May 15, 2009
Man Utd can clinch the Premier League title on Saturday afternoon when they welcome Arsenal to Old Trafford. Sir Alex Ferguson’s team currently sit six points ahead of Liverpool at the top of the league and with both teams having just two games lef to play, a point agaisnt the Gunners in Saturday’s live lunch time kick off on Sky Sports would be enough to make it three successive titles for United.
Ideally, United would like to win the League and be presented with the title in front of the Old Trafford faithful having taken all three points, which is priced at 4/6 with Paddypower whilst the minimum requirement of a point is a 12/5 chance. The odds on Arsenal gatecrashing the party and taking all three points back to London with them is 5/1, a bet that is sure to be very popular in mMerseyside!
The game will be the third time that the two sides have met in as many weeks following the the two Champions League Semi Final game between the two, which Man Utd gained the upper hand in spectacularly with a 3-1 win at The Emirate last week to book their place in the final, which takes place in Rome in a couple of weeks time. A repeat of that scoreline is sure to be very popular at odds of 11/1 as too will be a repeat of the first leg score of 1-0 to Man Utd at odds of 11/2.
The Paddypower offer for this game is very much concerned with history repeating itself. Refunding all losing first/last scorer, correct score and scorecast bets on the game if Ronaldo score direct from a free kick at any time during the game.

Arsenal v Villareal Betting Too Close to Call but Gunners favourites to reach Semi Finals
April 7, 2009
Arsenal travel to Spain on Tuesday to take on Villareal in the first leg of their Champions League Quarter Final. The Gunners will be looking to avoid defeat and hopefully get an away goal at the El Madrigal but the Spaniards remain unbeaten at home in this season’s Champions League, a stat that removes any appeal in the best odds of 7/4 with Coral about the away win. However, Villareal have drawn two of their four Champions League fixtures at home and at 9/4 with Totesport the draw does not look out of the question.
If Arsenal want to gain the upper hand in this fixture, then scoring an away goal is of paramount importance and Arsene Wenger would surely be delighted with a 1-1 (11/2 at Boylesports) to take back to The Emirates.
It is Boylesports who also offer the best odds (1/2) on Arsenal qualifying for the Semi Finals where they would face the winners of the Manchester United v Porto game whilst Villareal are a 6/4 chance.

Newmarket Betting Offer – Extra Place with Paddy Power
October 2, 2008
The fantastic three day Cambridgeshire meeting at Newmarket gets underway on Thursay with seven fantastic races for punters to get their teeth into. The feature race of the first day is the Listed Noel Murless Stakes, which should see the Luca Cumani trained Savarain take all the beating.
The race Paddy power has chosen for its daily racing special is the 2:35, Tattersalls Auction Stakes, which sees a field of 30, two year olds go to post. It certainly looks a tough race to fnd the winner of and with such a big field, each way betting is probably the way to go. Paddypower are paying out each way terms on the first four horses home in this race, comapred to just three with other bookmakers.
Excellerator is the 3/1 favourite in this race and at 3/1 is probably too short to be backing with 29 rivals to beat. Therefore, an each way bet on Diddums at 12/1 is possibly a good bet. The William Haggas trained gelding has shown potential in his first three outings and a bid for the top four is certainly not out of the question.

Fontwell Horse Racing Money Back Betting Offer
September 25, 2008
Fontwell is the chosen destination for Thursday’s (25th September) horse racing betting offer from Paddypower. If you’re planning on betting on the 4:10 at this meeting, then Paddypower will refund your stake if your horse finishes second behind the SP favourite.
The Alan King trained Archduke Ferdinand is likely to be the SP favourite in the race, he is the clear pick on form and the tissue favourite and is more likely to come for further support before the race than be overtaken in the betting. Strong Coffee is a horse that showed good form as a Novice last season and may be a threat but Irish Whispers is the horse that has been something of an early morning gamble and could well make his presence felt in this handicap.

Newcastle v Spurs Betting Offer
September 24, 2008
Two Premiership clubs both suffering from something of an early season crisis meet at St James’ Park on Wednesday night in the Carling Cup third round clash between Newcastle and Spurs, which is live on Sky Sports. Newcastle and Spurs have had nothing short of disasterous starts to the Premier League season, with both clubs occupying the bottom two places in the league table with only one win in ten games between them. Spurs are probably the bigger surprise to be languishing at the foot of the table given several big summer signings they made, which result them being the bookmakers favourites to finish highest in the betting without the big four, with many pundits even tipping them to finish in a Champions League place. However, things haven’t gone quite according to plan for Juande Ramos and there is already talk of him leaving the club less than twelve months in to his tenure. In contrast, it is off the field activities that have impacted on Newcastle’s on field performances. Current owner, Mike Ashley, has alredy made it clear that he intends to sell the club and former boss, Kevin Keegan left following his concerns over the club’s transfer policy. As a result, the Newcastle fans have undertaken fierce demonstration against the current state of affairs.
Both clubs will be looking upon Wednesday’s Carling Cup tie as an opportunity to get back to winning ways with Spurs the favourites to do just that at odds of 6/4 to win the match with bookmaker Paddypower. Newcastle are 13/8 and the draw is 12/5. Spurs should be the more likely winners given their players should be good enough to capitalise on Newcastle’s current plight, which shows no sign of ending soon.
If you are planning to have a bet on this game, Paddypower are offering a ‘tongue in cheek’ special offer “can’t win, won’t win” where they will be refunding any first or last goalscorer, correct score and scorecast bets is either side leads at half time but fails to win in 90 minutes
