O’Brien has Strong Hand in St Leger Betting
September 8, 2009 · Print This Article
With four of the ten runners declared for Saturday’s final classic of the season, the Ladbrokes St Leger at Doncaster, Aidan O’Brien looks to hold the strongest hand to land this Group One. The most fancied of the O’Brien quartet is favourite for the race, Age of Aquarius, who will be running for only the fourth time this season. Showing plenty of battling qualities when winning the Lingfield Derby trial on his seasonal debut, this son of Galileo didn’t impress in the Derby, suggesting that he needed further and this was again confirmed when finishing 2nd in the Grand Prix De Paris last time out. The 1m6f trip around Doncaster should be ideal and Age of Aquarius is the one to beat.

The other Aidan O’Brien runner at the top of the betting is Changingoftheguard who makes the step up from Handicap company following his second in the York Ebor last month. It is a big step up in class but O’Brien clearly has faith in this Colt’s ability and a big run can be expected, espceially with the other two Balldoyle runner propping up the betting at 50/1 and 100/1 respectively, suggesting that the race will be run to suit the fancied pair.
The Godolphin runner, Kitewood, looks to pose the biggest danger to the O’Brien duo and the impressive winner of a Group Thee at Newbury last time out showed that stamina was not a question and can build on that giving the Irish Raiders plenty to think about.
