Carlton House The Epsom Derby Favourite For The Queen
May 13, 2011 · Print This Article
The Dante Stakes has produced the winner of the Derby no less than four times in the last seven years making it then premier trial for the Epsom Classic, that stat alone makes it easy to understand why punters are getting excited about Carlton House who won the York race in some style recently. The Dante was billed as the big Derby trial with Carlton House, Seville and World Domination taking each other with both bookies and punters watching closely for clues, and it was the Sir Michael Stoute trained Carlton House who proved he was the class act winning going away from Seville.
What makes Carlton House all the more interesting is the fact that he carries the Royal colours and will be bidding to give Her Majesty The Queen her first ever Epsom Derby winner, that coupled with his impressive run at York mean he is now as short as 7/4 favourite with VC Bet. That looks short enough at the moment for a race like the Derby but many are predicting a massive gamble on Carlton House on the day of the race, with one or two even suggesting there is a chance he could go off an odds on shot by the time the stalls fly open on June 4th.
There is no doubt that it was an impressive run from Carlton House in the Dante but he could face a tough re match at Epsom against Seville who was not far behind him at York. The Aidan O’Brien team were happy with his run and expect him to improve for a quicker early pace which is likely to be the case in the Derby, with that in mind Seville can be backed at 7/1 with VC Bet.com to win the Derby. Balllydoyle always have a strong hand in the Classics and in Seville and Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial winner Recital they look to have a nice chance at Epsom with many struggling to split the pair at this stage.
