Its been a busy couple of weeks over in Ireland with the Queen making her fist official visit to the country this week before US President Barack Obama arrives in the country on Monday, it will be the first time he has visited the Emerald Isle since taking office and it promises to be a historic event. The Queen has dominated the headlines in Ireland this week and Obama will no doubt do the same when he arrives on Monday and as would be expected Paddy Power have been quick off the mark to offer some nice markets ahead of the visit.

The main market for the visit of Obama to Ireland is where he will visit first when he arrives in the country and all the indications are that he will head to Aras an Uachtarain to visit the President. Paddy Power are offering a short looking 1/8 that he will arrive in Dublin and head straight to the official residence of the President which looks like the obvious choice. Other contenders include Trinity College which is always a popular destination for visitors to the country and the popular Guinness Factory which can be backed at 16/1 also with Paddy Power.

As well as visiting Dublin, Obama will also head to Moneygall to visit his Ancestral homestead and punters can have a go at picking which pub he will visit for a pint of Guinness in the area. The hot favourite is Ollie Hayes which is as short as 1/20 while Joe Hayes is the outsider at 7/1 with Paddy Power to be the venue for the all important pint of Guinness picture in Moneygall on Tuesday.

When the coalition government was formed last May between the Conservative and Liberal Democrat Parties, one of the conditions from the Liberals was that a referendum be held on changing the voting system in the UK to an Alternative Vote (AV) system. The Liberal Democrats have been pushing for a move towards a more proportional representation system rather than the existing first past the post system that exists for General Elections every four or five years and the time has now come for the country to vote to keep the current system or adopt the new AV option which is being proposed by the Liberal Democrats.

The referendum will take place on May 5th and this will be the only time you will here government colleagues like Prime Minister David Cameron and Deputy Prime minister Nick Clegg disagree on a major policy issue. David cameron and the large majority of Tories will be pushing to keep the current fast past the post system and they will be pleased to read that Victor Chandler are offering odds of 4/7 about the majority of voters being against AV. That will be a confidence boost to Cameron as he looks to keep the Tory strongholds in the rural areas in the south as they build towards another General Election in 2014.

The way that an Alternative Vote system would work is that voters would be asked to rank potential MP’s in order rather than just selecting one preferred candidate, any person with more than 50% of the votes would be elected and if no one reaches that amount during the first count, a second count will take place where voters second choices would be used. Nick Clegg and the Liberals will know that they are most voters second choice and in theory that should give them more MP’s when the Election comes around making them the driving force behind the potential change. According to the bookies though they face a tough task to persuade voters to back AV and punters can get 5/4 with VC Bet about the majority of voters backing the move towards AV. It is an issue that splits the three main parties and over the next few weeks voters can expect strong campaigns from both sides of the argument, with many who are more used to arguing across the house of commons forming unlikely alliances.

It is the first full budget of the Conservative/Liberal Democrat coalition today and its been a series of cuts, cuts and more cuts since the parties took control after Gordon Brown and the Labour Party had gone spending crazy. In June 2010 he delivered an emergency budget which saw an increase in the VAT amount but what surprises does the new Chancellor of the Exchequer have in store for the United Kingdom today? The bookies Paddy Power have prepared some special bets just for the day.

One of the big betting specials each year on budget day is the colour of the tie that the Chancellor shall wear, this year the favourite is Blue at odds of 2/1, but is that too conservative for the coalition, he wont wear yellow that’s for the sure which is out at 16/1 a mix of the two colours would indicate a green tie which is at odds of 5/1

What colour will Osbornes tie be during the budget speech?

Other colours are available pop over to the Paddy Power website to check out the other options.

2/1 – Blue

3/1 – Navy

4/1 – Grey

4/1 – Purple

5/1 – Green

Length of the Budget Speech

Another market to bet on today is the actual length of the speech, will it be all over in 15 minutes or are we looking at hours and hours highlighting all the tax increases and cuts to public spending that we will all have to endure?

56 mins or more – evens

51 – 55 mins – 7/4

The next election to decide the Mayor of London does not take place until 2012 but the major political parties have already announced who will be standing for them in the Mayoral elections.

The current Mayor and Boris Johnson has announced that he wants to stand for a second term on behalf of the Conservative Party, for Labour the ex Mayor Ken Livingstone emerged as the Labour nomination after defeating former MP Oona King in a vote amongst party members, gaining over 68% of the votes. Whilst the Liberal Democrats have postponed their nomination process until later this year but it is thought that former MP Lembit Opik will emerge as the candidate.

Next Mayor of London odds

All odds for this market come courtesy of bookmakers Bet 365.

8/11 – Boris Johnson

33/1 – Lembit Opik

Ken Livingstone will be hoping to be reinstalled as Mayor having lost out to the surprise winner Boris Johnson in the 2008 election; Livingstone of course was London’s first Mayor winning the 2000 as an independent candidate and was kept on in 2004 after winning for Labour.

Both Mayors have come under scrutiny for the polices during there terms, Livingstone famously brought in the Congestion Charge to the capital whilst Johnson has brought in the “Boris Bike Scheme” which will cost the city over £100 million over 6 years but will help to reduce congestion in the City. Johnson is also known for his off the cuff remarks, when questioned whether he should carry on his £250,000 a year job at the Telegraph writing a column he dismissed the salary as “chicken feed”.

The Nobel Peace Prize is one of the most coveted awards in the world and it is awarded annually in Norway and comes with a cash prize of around $1.4 million. The award can be bestowed to individuals or to whole organisations such as Medecins Sans Frontieres who won in 1999 for its humanitarian work. The last winner was Liu Xiaobo for his for his long and non-violent struggle for fundamental human rights in China, which was awarded to him in absence due to being held as a prisoner in the Peoples Republic of China. He won in a year that saw a record number of nominations (237 names were submitted) given to the Nobel Committee.

The bookmaker Paddy Power has released a list of who they believe is in for a good chance of being nominated and winning the award, one of the frontrunners is Julian Assange the founder and spokesperson for the controversial website Wiki Leaks which has caused uproar in the political community by releasing confidential documents concerning matters such as the cover-ups in Iraq and Afghanistan and cables from the US Embassy containing diplomatic analysis of world leaders. However the current favourite to win is Aung San Suu Kyi the leader of the opposition party in Burma who had spent 15 years under house arrest.

The wife of John Bercow, the Tory MP who is the current speaker of the House of Commons has caused something of a stir in the media following her racy photo shoot and subsequent interview in the London Evening Standard. For an interview Sally Bercow was seen draped naked under a sheet for a Valentines Day feature in the paper. On top of this in the interview she said that since her husband became the speaker for the House of Commons the amount of women that are hitting on her husband has quadrupled.

This is sure to bring embarrassment to the house and to the speaker and could very easily lead to the downfall of John Bercows political career, with columnists in papers such as the Daily Mail saying that he should lock his wife up in the tower to stop these kinds of gaffes. Last year Sally Bercow criticised William Hague for opening talking about his wives miscarriages she said at the time “You don’t need to disclose this level of detail to prove you’re not gay” with reference to Mr Hague’s speculated relationship with his aid Christopher Myers, much to the disgust of the Conservative bank bench.

The head of the Catholic Church is set to arrive in England on Thursday and it will be the first time since 1982 that there has been a papal visit. When he arrives there will be punters wondering whether Pope Benedict XVI will kiss the tarmac upon his arrival at Edinburgh airport. The kissing of the floor upon landing was celebrated by the masses and it was a signature Pope move of John Paul II but Pope Benedict XVI has not been performing the classics and he is at odds of 10/1 with bookmakers Paddy Power to do it.

His Holiness is scheduled to tour the country in the infamous Popemobile that will coming out of retirement for the event and Paddy Power are cheekily offering odds of 80/1 that the vehicle will run out of petrol during any of the UK Masses and 250/1 that Top Gears the Stig is the official driver of the Popemobile.

In the 28 years that have passed since the last Papal visit the world has changed and recent allegations of abuse by Catholic Priests has changed opinions of the Catholic Church and as such there have been poor sales of tickets for the masses which have meant that the beatification Mass of Cardinal Newman that was scheduled to take place at Coventry Airport (when used in 1982 it had 350,000 attendees) has been moved to Cofton Park in Birmingham.

The new Conservative/Liberal coalition Government has been in power for just under 2 months and the Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne will be delivering his first budget to the house of commons tomorrow.

The new Government has already outlined cuts of £6 billion that it needs to make and the budget is normally a way to claw in much needed revenue, however among the items on the agenda will be the much talked about freeze on council tax charges as promised in the Conservative manifesto.

However to gain revenue there is expected to be rise in VAT (Value Added Tax) and bookmakers William Hill are now offering odds of 1/7 that the rate will go up and 4/1 that is will stay at the current rate of 17.5%.

What colour will Osborne’s tie be?

Will the first joint government budget see Osborne choose a neutral (not party) colour?
