Odds pointing to an increase in VAT in Osborne’s first budget

June 21, 2010

The new Conservative/Liberal coalition Government has been in power for just under 2 months and the Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne will be delivering his first budget to the house of commons tomorrow.

The new Government has already outlined cuts of £6 billion that it needs to make and the budget is normally a way to claw in much needed revenue, however among the items on the agenda will be the much talked about freeze on council tax charges as promised in the Conservative manifesto.

However to gain revenue there is expected to be rise in VAT (Value Added Tax) and bookmakers William Hill are now offering odds of 1/7 that the rate will go up and 4/1 that is will stay at the current rate of 17.5%.

What colour will Osborne’s tie be?

Will the first joint government budget see Osborne choose a neutral (not party) colour?

Will the Gulf oil spill force the BP boss out of his job?

June 9, 2010

The horrific oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico is not only causing an ecological disaster it is starting to become even more of a financial one for British Petroleum, shares in the company fell by 3.7% today amid worries that company will have to suspends its dividend payout to share holders due to the costs of cleaning up the spill. The shares that were traded at 648p when the accident first happened back in April are now being traded for just 393.6p per share.

With the company losing so much money and its position in the press becoming a PR disaster it looks as if chief executive Tony Hayward’s days as the company could be numbered, this was not helped after US President Barack Obama said he would have fired Hayward after the spill especially in light of comments made by Hayward that “he wanted his life back” and referred to the Gulf as a “big ocean”.

Next Labour Leader betting odds

May 19, 2010

Following the poor results for Labour in the recent General Election which saw Labour win fewer seats than the Conservatives and then fail to make a workable coalition with Nick Clegg’s Liberal Democrat, Gordon Brown has resigned as leader of the Labour Party and looked genuinely happy for the first time in years. His successor will be announced at the Labour Party conference on the 25th September; in the meantime Harriet Harman will be the acting leader of the party.

So far only two candidates have officially announced their intention to run for leader and surprising it is the brother Miliband, elder brother David was the former foreign secretary and his younger sibling Ed was the former energy secretary and one of Gordon Browns inner circle. Hot on their heel is expected to be the former schools secretary Ed Balls who was Browns closet ally put who also was reported to be the reason that the Labour/Liberal coalition did not take off.

David Cameron still looking strong to win the election but could Clegg cause a Hung Parliament?

May 3, 2010

The three television debates between the 3 major party leaders have now all been aired and for the Liberal Democrats its has been a great success, after the first debate was aired there was a great increase in the polls for the Liberal Democrats thanks to the excellent work performed by Nick Clegg who amazed viewers by showing that he actually existed and there could be a choice other than Labour or the Conservatives.

However strong Clegg has made the Lib Dems since the first debate it is not thought that he will have enough votes to overtake both the Conservatives and Labour, whatever happens a Labour majority is doubtful, the most likely to happen is that either the Conservatives or Labour will need the Lib Dems to create a coalition government to stop the prospects of a hung parliament.

Will Nick Clegg come out on top of the second television debate?

April 21, 2010

The UK electorate waits with baited breath as it is approaching round two of the leadership debates and the three leaders of the major UK political parties will all meet up again tomorrow night for the debate that will be shown like on Sky News and Sky News HD starting at 8pm. The programme could be Sky News highest viewed show in history as the first debate was watched by around 10 million viewers on ITV1.

After the first debate was aired the Liberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg surprised everyone when he came out clearly on top of the debate and in doing so has increased the odds of the Lib Debs winning the 2010 General Election with them currently showing at odds of 9/1 to win, in July 2009 they were at an amazing 80/1 to win!

During the initial debate Clegg managed to come across as the most sincere of the three politicians and at times its looked as if Gordon Brown was trying to sow the seeds of a Labour/Lib Dem alliance should the election end in a hung parliament by using the phrase “I agree with Nick” which has now become a catch phrase of the debate.

Who will win the second debate

  • 5/6 – Nick Clegg
  • 6/5 – David Cameron
  • 8/1 – Gordon Brown

First leader to refer to the volcanic cloud

These odds apply only to the debate shown on Sky News, opening statements are not included.

David Cameron looks a sure bet to win the television debates

April 15, 2010

The first round of public debates from the three leading political parties in the United Kingdom are about to be in ready for the 2010 General Election. All three of the leaders will be keen to put the recent expenses scandals behind them and concentrate on winning power come May 6th.

The first debate kicks off tonight in Manchester for 90 minutes, the first half will concentrate on domestic affairs and then other topics. Each of the party leaders will be given airtime for a one minute opening statement and then a further 90 seconds at the end to sum it all up, the audience have been told there will be no clapping or booing allowed.

A surprise outcome could see the invisible man Nick Clegg win the first set of the public debates as political pundits have been placing bets at William Hill and have backed him down from odds of 9/4 to 2/1 with several three figure bets being placed on him. However Tory Leader David Cameron is still the firm favourite to come out shining.

Budget Day betting specials

March 24, 2010

It is the day we look forward to more than any in the political calendar other than the general election (which is just around the corner) its Budget Day in Westminster and the Chancellor of the Exchequer Alistair Darling reveals to the nation the governments spending plans when he brings out the infamous red briefcase.

Today in his speech to the houses of parliament he will be increasing taxes across the board (and on rare occasions, decreasing) to achieve their spending budgets, expect items like beer, spirits and fags to cost you more over the coming months and petrol looks like it will go through the roof as Darling implements taxes that have been previously deferred.

Will the new budget be a desperate last chance attempt by Labour to stay in power at the next general election or will they be scuttling the sinking ship leaving it impossible for a new crew to save the ship when they takeover?

Labour’s Post Budget Rating

Length of Speech

How long will Darling’s speech to the house take? Timing starts from the moment he speaks his first world to the last and will be rounded off to the nearest minute.

  • 10/11 – 50 minutes or less
  • 6/4 – 51 to 55 minutes inclusively
  • 4/1 – 56 minutes or more
