Euro 2012 Qualifier: England v Switzerland Betting

May 31, 2011

After another hectic end of season finale England’s superstars would be forgiven for packing their bags and jetting off abroad for a deserved holiday. However, they cannot afford to relax just yet as there is the small matter of an important Euro 2012 qualifier against Switzerland at 4:45pm on Saturday 4th June.

The Three Lions are currently locked on 10 points with surprise contenders Montenegro at the top of Group G, with their superior goal difference all that separates the two teams. In contrast, the much fancied Swiss side have had a woeful campaign, where they have picked up just four points from four games. Their Head Coach, Ottmar Hitzfeld, knows that they need to come away with an unlikely victory at Wembley in order to ignite their slim qualification chances. Whereas a win for Fabio Capello’s men could extend England’s lead to three points at the top of the table as they edge closer to automatic qualification for Euro 2012 next summer.

England were convincing 3-1 winners aginst Switzerland back in September when the teams met in Basel. England are firm favourites at 4/11 to come away with the three points on Saturday, whilst Switzerland are outsiders at 8/1 to record what would be a shock win. However, the Swiss cannot be taken for granted as this is the same team who upset the eventual champions Spain 1-0 in their opening group game of the 2010 World Cup. If England can play to their full potential we fancy a convincing win, with a scoreline of 3-1 looking good value at 11/1 with Victor Chandler.

With Wayne Rooney suspended and Jermaine Defoe injured, England face a mini-striker crisis. This could be a blessing in disguise as it gives fringe forwards such as Darren Bent, Bobby Zamora and Peter Crouch a chance to shine and really prove themselves on an international level. Victor Chandler have given Bent odds of 18/5 to open the scoring and 4/1 to grab a brace, whilst Zamora and Crouch are both available at 17/4 to score the game’s opening goal.

England v Switzerland Match Odds

England v Switzerland Specials

18/1 – Darren Bent to score a hat-trick

Gareth Barry favourite to captain England against Ghana

March 28, 2011

Fabio Capello is expected to name a much changed squad for England’s friendly with Ghana tomorrow, allowing fringe players the opportunity to impress. With Frank Lampard, John Terry, Ashley Cole and Wayne Rooney all due to be rested, the captain’s armband is up for grabs. Skybet have installed the Manchester City midfielder Gareth Barry as the favourite to skipper the three lions at 2/5. In February Barry briefly captained England for the last ten minutes in a friendly against Denmark.

West Ham midfielder Scott Parker impressed in his holding role in England’s 2-0 against Wales last Saturday, and is available at odds of 4/1 to captain the national side against Ghana. Glen Johnson, Joleon Lescott and Joe Hart are also in the running, with the Arsenal youngster Jack Wilshere an outsider at 10/1.

England are 4/7 to win, whilst Ghana are 9/2 to pull off a surprise victory, with a draw 9/2. The Black Cats will bid to become the first ever African side to win on English soil and will be full of confidence after their 3-0 win against Congo last weekend. The win put them top of their African Cup of Nations qualifying group.

England Captain v Ghana with Skybet:

  • 2/5 – Gareth Barry
  • 4/1 – Scott Parker
  • 5/1 – Glen Johnson
  • 8/1 – Joleon Lescott
  • 10/1 – Jack Wilshere
  • 10/1 – Joe Hart
  • 14/1 – Peter Crouch
  • 16/1 – Jermaine Defor

18/1 Terry to score first against Wales

March 24, 2011

The England captaincy saga has dominated the build-up to England’s Euro 2012 clash with Wales at the Millenium Stadium this Saturday. What better way for John Terry to quieten his critics then to get England off to the perfect start? Totesport have the new England captain at 18/1 to score first.

With three games played England find themselves second in Group G behind leaders Montenegro. The Three Lions will be going all out for a win in order to return to the top of the table but will be more than wary of the attacking threat posed by Wales. England are firm favourites to beat the Welsh in Cardiff at 4/9, while Wales have long odds of 6/1. A draw between the two neighbours is 3/1.

Wales v England Totesport specials:

  • 66/1 – John Terry to score and England to win 1-0.
  • 25/1 – Andy Carroll to score a hat-trick.
  • 12/1 – Wayne Rooney to score and England to win 2-0.

Rio Ferdinand 7/4 to captain England again?

March 22, 2011

Boylesports are offering odds of 7/4 for Rio Ferdinand to return as England captain in the future.

The Manchester United and England defender has been plagued by injuries of late, which has restricted his international appearances to just seven in the past two years. However, Ferdinand is determined to return to full fitness and recapture the form that persuaded Fabio Capello to give him the armband just over a year ago.

Last year Capello dropped John Terry as England captain after it was revealed that the Chelsea star had cheated on his wife, only on Sunday to perform a remarkable u-turn and reinstate Terry as the leader of the national team. Boylesports have Terry at 3/1 to lose the captaincy once again before Euro 2012.

It was the manner in which Ferdinand was dropped that has angered the 32-year-old the most, sparking rumours that he will never play under Capello again 1/3.

The captaincy saga combined with his persistent injuries could persuade Ferdinand to retire from international football altogether before Euro 2012 3/1.

  • 3/1 – Ferdinand to play for England under Capello once again
  • 7/4 – Ferdinand to captain England again
  • 3/1 – Ferdinand to retire from international football before Euro 2012
  • 3/1 – Terry to lose captaincy before 2012

Will England be another notch on Montenegros belt?

October 12, 2010

Tonight at 20.00, England will welcome the Montenegro national side to Wembley Stadium for their Group G qualifying game for the all important 2012 European Championships. Rio Ferdinand has been confirmed as the captain of the England squad, reclaiming the arm band from temporary skipper Steven Gerrard. This is of course the position he would have had during the 2010 World Cup had he not been injured by Emile Heskey during the world cup practice sessions. Fabio Capello’s team will be without John Terry who has a back injury and Sunderland’s Darren Bent who is out with a groin injury.

The World Cup is over time to concentrate on Euro 2012

July 12, 2010

Well the World Cup in South Africa is now officially over and the team that were tipped to win it from the start walked away with the trophy in one of the most bitter fought if not prettiest game of football in the 2010 World Cup. The tournament threw up quite a few surprises and early than expected exits some of the worlds “larger” teams, however we did not get to see the fairytale ending that would have seen Ghana in the final instead it was an all European fixture. Which brings us to the next major football event the 2012 European Championships which will be hosted by Poland and Ukraine between 8 June and 1 July 2012.

Euro 2012 Outright Winner

There is little surprise that new World Cup winners Spain are the favourites according to Ladbrokes to win Euro 2012 at odds of 4/1, England’s poor World Cup performance sees them at odds of 8/1, host nations Ukraine and Poland are very much the outside chance to win.

  • 4/1 – Spain
  • 6/1 – Germany
  • 7/1 – Holland
  • 8/1 – England
  • 9/1 – Italy
  • 10/1 – Portugal
