England Captain Odds Point To Steven Gerrard
February 7, 2012
The John Terry England captaincy saga has escalated into a media storm with seemingly everyone wading in with an opinion on the subject. Last week the Football Association stripped the defender of the armband after learning that his court hearing for alleged racism towards Anton Ferdinand will not take place until after Euro 2012. England manager Fabio Capello reacted angrily towards the news as he was not consulted about the decision. The Italian must now face the difficult task of naming a new captain as England prepare for the European Championships this summer.
Inspirational Liverpool skipper Steven Gerrard is the hot favourite in the betting. The 31-year-old leads by example and is popular with both players and supporters. There are however concerns over his fitness. In recent years he has been plagued by injuries but providing he is fully fit and in-form then he is widely expected to lead The Three Lions out at Euro 2012. After Gerrard the field is wide open with a number of players in with a shout. Scott Parker has emerged as a serious contender in the betting with odds of 7/2 with Paddy Power. The 2010/11 Football Writers’ Footballer of the Year may not have the international experience of some of his colleagues but his passion, determination and fighting qualities cannot be doubted. His battling performances have also made him a pivotal part of Capello’s plans.
Gareth Barry has leadership experience at club level but may not be the most popular choice. Despite impressive performances for Man City this season he is still remembered for his sluggish displays at the World Cup. At 8/1 goalkeeper Joe Hart is definitely worth a bet. The 24-year-old has proved himself to be a mature, reliable and consistent player and will be involved with England for at least the next 10 years. Frank Lampard would usually be considered among the favourites but with his starting place in doubt he is unlikely to be named captain. Former skipper Rio Ferdinand instantly ruled himself out of contention but you never know in football and he has outside odds of 20/1.
England have been drawn in Group D for Euro 2012 where they will face France, Sweden and co-hosts Ukraine. They kick-off their tournament against France on Monday 11th June in Donetsk and have been installed as the 6/4 favourites to win the group. Capello’s men are also available at 9/1 to win the Championships for the first time in their history.
Captain for first game of Euro 2012 Finals
- 4/6 – Steven Gerrard
- 7/2 – Scott Parker
- 7/1 – Gareth Barry
- 8/1 – Joe Hart
- 8/1 – Frank Lampard
- 14/1 – Ashley Cole
- 20/1 – Rio Ferdinand
Liverpool vs Tottenham Odds – Gareth Bale Special
February 6, 2012
Liverpool v Tottenham – Monday 6th February (Sky Sports 1, 8pm)
Liverpool take on Tottenham at Anfield tonight in a game that both teams are eager to win. While Spurs are looking for a win to get them to within three points of second placed Man Utd, Liverpool are looking to close the gap on the top four as they continue their quest for a Champions League qualification spot. Liverpool are the 23/20 favourites, with Spurs are priced at 5/2 to win their fourth consecutive match against their opponents, while a draw is available at 9/4. If Gareth Bale scores a goal at anytime, Paddy Power will refund all losing first/last goalscorer, correct score & scorecast singles on the match. The Welsh wizard has been in scintillating form recently, scoring three in his last two games for Spurs.
While Liverpool remain undefeated at home this season they have frequently struggled to convert their possession into goals and as a result have drawn seven of their 11 matches at Anfield. They do, however, head into the game in good form after recently booking their place in the Carling Cup final, knocking rivals Man Utd out of the FA Cup and then recording a convincing win away to Wolves last Tuesday. The Reds are also boosted by the return of striker Luis Suarez who comes back into the team following his eight match ban. After their last gasp defeat to league leaders Man City last month Tottenham looked to be out of the running for title but recent results mean that a win tonight will put them right back in contention. They thrashed Liverpool 4-0 back in September and will be confident of returning to London with the three points.
Luis Suarez has been installed as the 11/2 favourite to open the scoring on his return. The in-form Craig Bellamy can be backed at 7/1, Andy Carroll at 15/2 and Steven Gerrard at 8/1. Dirk Kuyt, who after a goal drought has scored two in two games, is available at 9/1 to score first. Tottenham’s Emmanuel Adebayor has been priced at 7/1, while new signing Louis Saha and Gareth Bale are available at 9/1, with Bale also available at 3/1 to score anytime.

Jedward Odds On To Represent Ireland Once Again In Eurovision 2012 Betting
February 6, 2012
The 2012 Eurovision Song Contest is on the horizon and attention in Ireland is already turning to who will represent them in Baku, Azerbaijan. Once again all eyes are on those famous Jedward twins who are odds on to sing for Ireland for the second year in-a-row, the boys who we love to hate made their debut in the competition in 2011 and will be hoping to improve on their eight place in 2012. According to the latest show of betting about who will represent the country it appears that Ireland will once again take the humorous side with their entry with Jedward the likely candidates.
John and Edward are available at just 1/3 with Paddy Power to be given the honour of representing Ireland in Azerbaijan this year and it would appear that they have the gig in the bag once again. The Irish twins will be hoping for full marks from the UK but like most western European countries they know that they will struggle against the now consistent eastern block voting which has seen the Eurovision become little more than a charade. Countries like Ireland, the UK, France and Spain seem to have little chance of claiming the win in the modern era which is highlighted by the fact that we are all off to Azerbaijan for the 2012 contest.
At the moment Paddy Power make Ireland a 14/1 shot to win the Eurovision Song Contest in 2012 which does look a little skinny as they go for their first win since 1996 and their eighth in total. The UK are of interest as well but their popularity in Europe gives them next to no chance of picking up the prize, despite that Paddy Power still give them an outside chance at 25/1 to claim the Song Contest for the first time since 1997.

Chelsea vs Man Utd Betting – Penalty Special With Paddy Power
February 2, 2012
Chelsea v Man Utd – Sunday 5th February (Sky Sports 1, 4pm)
In recent seasons Chelsea vs Man Utd would have been billed as one of the matches of the season, pitting together two teams fighting it out for the Premier League title. While Sir Alex Ferguson’s men are currently competing for an unprecedented 20th league crown, Chelsea are fighting just to keep their place in the top four. After a difficult few months Chelsea will be desperate for a confidence boosting win against their rivals and are the 6/4 favourites to do just that, while United are available at 15/8, with a draw priced at 9/4. If a penalty is scored in this match Paddy Power will refund all losing first/last goalscorer, correct score & scorecast singles.
Chelsea have been sluggish of late with costly back-to-back draws against Norwich and Swansea allowing the likes of Newcastle and Liverpool to close the gap. Their main aim this season is finishing in the top four for the tenth consecutive season but they certainly have a fight on their hands. Defeats at home to Arsenal, Liverpool and most recently Aston Villa highlight how Stamford Bridge is not the fortress it once was. Meanwhile Unitedhave an excellent record on the road, winning eight of their 11 away games this season. They have got the better of Chelsea recently, winning the last four encounters in all competitions, including a 3-1 win at Old Trafford back in September.
Just over a year since the £50million arrival of Fernando Torres and the Spaniard has scored a pitiful three league goals and hasn’t hit the back of the net for Chelsea since October – that’s over 1,000 minutes of football. He will still be haunted by the absolute sitter he missed at Old Trafford but what better way to redeem yourself then scoring against United at Stamford Bridge on Sunday. Torres can be backed at 5/1 to open the scoring and 7/5 to score anytime. Juan Mata has been Chelsea’s stand-out player this season and is a tempting 13/2 to score first, with Daniel Sturridge is priced at 6/1. Wayne Rooney is expected to be back in the United starting line-up this week and has been handed odds of 5/1 to be the First Goalscorer. Javier Hernandez, who opened the scoring against Stoke mid-week, is available at 6/1, while Dimitar Berbatov has odds of 13/2.

George Clooney The Star Name In Oscars 2012 Betting
January 30, 2012
It’s awards season in Hollywood and the daddy of them all, the Oscars, are now fast approaching at the end of February and there are a number of fascinating betting markets for punters to sink their teeth into. The Academy Awards are of course a global event as the best films and actors are given their moment in the limelight and looking across the nominees there is no doubt that George Clooney could well be the big success story this year. Clooney put in a remarkable performance in The Descendants and he is a short as 2/5 with Paddy Power to claim the Gest Actor award for the first time.
While Clooney looks set to be the big name when it comes to the actors on show there is no doubt that the big film at the Oscars this year is likely to be The Artist which has taken the box office by storm over the past couple of months. The silent film from France is being hailed as a masterpiece by many critics and Paddy Power rate it as short as 1/6 to claim The Best Picture award with the Academy Award looking as good as in the bag.
The artist is likely to pick up another Academy Award with Michel Hazanavicius set to win the Best Director gong, his work has been widely praised which is reflected in his short price of 1/6 with Paddy Power to claim the award. The Artist really has come out of nowhere over the past few months and it looks set to dominate the Academy Awards this year according to the bookies while George Clooney is also set to earn some well deserved recognition for his brilliant role in The Descendants.

Liverpool vs Man Utd Odds – Penalty Special With Paddy Power
January 26, 2012
Liverpool v Man Utd - Saturday 28th January (12.45pm ITV1)
Fierce rivals Liverpool and Man Utd lock horns at Anfield on Saturday in what promises to be a fiery FA Cup fourth round encounter. Liverpool head into the match as the narrow 8/5 favourites for the win, while United can be backed at 7/4, with a draw available at 11/5. If there is a penalty scored in this match, Paddy Power will refund all losing First/Last Goalscorer, Correct Score and Scorecast singles on the match.
Liverpool will be looking to win their first FA Cup since 2006, while United haven’t won the prestigious trophy since 2004. Kenny Dalglish’s men will be brimming with confidence after securing their place in the Carling Cup Final following their 3-2 aggregate win over Man City, while United, who recently knocked out City in the FA Cup third round, will also head into the match with a swagger following their 2-1 win at Arsenal last weekend. The sides played out a closely fought 1-1 draw at Anfield earlier in the season – which was clouded by the Luis Suarez and Patrice Evra incident – and this match is likely to be just as tight. United beat Liverpool 1-0 at Anfield in the third round last year and have only lost three of the 16 meetings between the sides in the FA Cup.
Wayne Rooney is the 9/2 favourite to grab the game’s first goal on Saturday, while Danny Welbeck, who scored the opener against Arsenal last weekend, and Javier Hernandez have both been priced at 6/1. Liverpool’s problems in front of goal have been much publicised this season and they will no doubt be doing everything they can to get Craig Bellamy on the ball. He is the hub of their attacking play, with his blistering speed a problem for any defence. The Welshman is available at 6/1 to open the scoring. Inspirational captain Steven Gerrard has three goals in his last four appearances against United and could be a good bet at 15/2 to score first.

Liverpool vs Man City – Steven Gerrard Money-Back Special
January 24, 2012
Liverpool vs Man City – Wednesday 25th January (7.45pm, Sky Sports 1)
Liverpool and Man City face each other in the second-leg of their Carling Cup semi-final on Wednesday, with Liverpool holding a narrow advantage following their 1-0 win at the Etihad Stadium. Liverpool have been installed as the 8/5 favourites to win the match in 90 minutes, while City have been priced at 17/10, with a draw available at 23/10. Liverpool are also the odds-on 4/11 favourites to progress through to the Final, while City can be backed at 15/8. If Steven Gerrard scores anytime in the 90 minutes, Paddy Power will refund all losing first/last Goalscorer, Correct Score and Scorecast singles on the match.
Liverpool may be going through a mini-slump in the league but they have been excellent in both domestic cups. They are unbeaten in 12 home matches in all competitions this season and also have the cushion of a one goal advantage. However, City will be buoyed by their last gasp victory against Tottenham on Sunday and they have the fire power to get themselves back into the tie. The teams have met three times already this season, with one win each and draw. City haven’t won at Anfield since 2003 and Kenny Dalglish will be looking for the supporters to create an intimidating atmosphere. This match has the potential to go either way but if City score an early goal then expect an open and free-flowing tie.
Sergio Aguero is the 11/2 favourite to open the scoring at Anfield, while fellow strikers Mario Balotelli and Edin Dzeko have both been priced at 13/2. Liverpool have struggled for goals all season but Craig Bellamy is still well worth a punt at 13/2, with Steven Gerrard available at 7/1. Liverpool are priced at 13/2 to record another 1-0 win in 90 minutes, while City are available at 8/1 to 2-1 in 90 minutes.

Six Nations 2012 Betting Shows France As The Team To Beat
January 23, 2012
The start of February brings the 2012 Six Nations rugby to the forefront for fans and punters and it promises to be an intriguing tournament as the teams look to start a new cycle towards the 2015 World Cup. Teams like France and Wales will be looking to build upon what they achieved in New Zealand last year while the likes of England and Ireland will be looking to start again after failing to produce their best rugby down under.
The French made it all the way to the final in the World Cup and they go into the the 2012 Six Nations as the favourites for victory, Paddy Power make Les Bleu the 13/8 favourites to lift the trophy for the fifth time since the tournament was expanded in 2000. The French look like a strong team on paper but they are always a dangerous team to back with any certainty and there has to be value elsewhere. The Welsh had a good World Cup as well and go into the Six Nations high on confidence and aiming to win the tournament, they do have to play France at home which is a plus and they are the close second favourites with Paddy Power.
England left the World Cup in disarray and go into the Six Nations with a new coach and several new players with a few of the more experienced names retired or dropped by interim coach, Stuart Lancaster. At this stage it is impossible to tell how the defending champions will play but they are always dangerous and can be backed at 7/2 with Paddy Power to lift the trophy in 2012. It is shaping up to be a fascinating tournament over the next couple of months and as the latest betting suggests we could be in for one of the closest in recent years with at least four teams capable of winning.

January 20, 2012
Man City v Tottenham – Sunday 22nd January (1.30pm, Sky Sports 1)
Arsenal v Man Utd – Sunday 22nd January (4pm, Sky Sports 1)
On Sunday four of the top five teams are in action in what promises to be an explosive day of Premier League football. In the 1.30pm kick-off league leaders Man City host fellow title contenders Tottenham, which is followed by a battle between old foes Arsenal and Man Utd at the Emirates Stadium. If there are four or more goals scored, Paddy Power will refund all losing first/last goalscorer, correct score & scorecast singles on that match.
Man City simply have a flawless record at the Etihad Stadium this season, winning all ten of their home league games and scoring 31 goals in the process. However, as recent cup defeats to Liverpool and Man Utd have shown, they are beatable on home soil. Tottenham suffered a slight setback last weekend when they were held at home by an inspired Wolves side but they will no doubt be looking to bounce back and gain revenge for the 5-1 hammering City dealt them at White Hart Lane back in August. City head into the match as the odds-on 10/11 favourites, while Spurs are well worth a bet at 3/1, with a draw priced at 5/2. Sergio Aguero is the 9/2 favourite to open the scoring, with Mario Balotelli and Dzeko have both been handed odds of 11/2. With Emmanuel Adebayor unable to play due to the conditions of his loan, Jermaine Defoe could prove to be a good bet at 8/1 to score first.
Man Utd’s stunning 8-2 win against Arsenal at Old Trafford back in August was a truly astonishing result but instead of crumbling under the relentless pressure The Gunners have managed to bounce back and get their quest for a Champions League spot back on track. Arsene Wenger will be hoping that recent back-to-back league defeats haven’t dented their surge. United’s form has dipped slightly of late too with two league defeats in their last three games but as always they will be going for the win in order to keep on track with City.
United have won six and drawn two of the last nine meetings between the sides in all competitions, including two comprehensive 3-1 victories at the Emirates. Fergie’s men are the narrow 13/8 favourites, while Arsenal are available at 17/10 for the win, with a draw at 9/4. Robin Van Persie is the 4/1 favourite to open the scoring, while Wayne Rooney is priced at 9/2. In the past Thierry Henry has been a consistent thorn in United’s side and he can be backed at 6/1 to score first.

Brit Award Betting 2012 Points Towards Ed Sheeran Success
January 19, 2012
It’s that time of year when the British music industry is gearing up for the buggest night on the calendar with the 2012 Brit Awards fast approaching. It has been a great year of success for British music with a number of new acts making the big breakthrough and featuring in several categories at the Brits. Ed Sheeran has burst onto the scene in the last six months and according to the bookmakers he could be the artist to watch at the O2 Arena after he was nominated for no less than four awards next month.
The award for Best Male is always one of the big ones and Paddy Power make Sheeran the 1/4 favourite to lift the gong at this stage. It appears that Sheeran has at least one gong in the bag and will be looking to double up in the Best Breakthrough Act for which is also the hot favourite at 4/7 with Paddy Power with only Jessie J likely to offer him any real competition in according to the latest show of betting.
Sheeran is also nominated for the prestigious Best Album award at the Brits but that prize looks set to go to Adele who has had a monster year on both sides of the Atlantic. Her album, 21, has sold a mammoth amount in the UK and the London born singer can be backed at just 1/12 with Paddy Power to claim the award next month. There is no doubt that Adele has that one in the bag but it could be that ed Sheeran is the star of the 2012 Brit Awards, with four nominations to his name he looks a good thing for at least two awards to cap a stunning year for the young singer-songwriter.
