Irish Derby Odds

June 26, 2009

All eyes will be on the Curragh come Sunday afternoon when the first Colt in twenty years to win the 2,000 Guienas and Epsom Derby double, Sea the Stars, bids to add to his growing reputation by winning the Irish Derby. His trainer, John Oxx, cast doubt over whether he will run in the race after rain hit the Curragh on Thursday and Friday but is not going to make a decision til nearer the time, allowing the track time to dry out if the weather improves. Therefore, anybody looking to back Sea the Stars is probably best waiting until he is confirmed on Sunday morning, thus ensuring a refund if he doesn’t run. However, the 11/10 currently available with Boylesports may be long gone by then if he does run.

If Sea the Stars does run then it has to be taken that he will win, the decisive manner in which he won the English equivelent was enough to suggest that he is some way ahead of his d rival three year olds. Fame and Glory, who finished runner up at Epsom is a best price 11/4 with Coral to turn the tables and should Sea the Stars not get the runner, that would look  a cracking price if you are happy to take that risk early, with none of the other runners looking liek serious dangers.

The bookmakers odds for Wednesday night’s Champions League final between Man Utd and Barcelona suggest that opinion is spilt on which of these two Footballing Giants will be crowned Champions of Europe. The majority of bookies are offering odds of 10/11 about either side lifting the Champions League trophy at the end of the game in Rome, whether that is after 90 minutes, extra time, or for the second year running, a penalty shoot out!  Firms offering 10/11 each of two include Bet365, Paddypower, Boylesports and Stan James, however, Freebetsblog has done its research and found the best odds about both Manchester United and Barcelona winning.  Blue Square are offering the best price anywhere on Barcelona becoming champions at even money and Coral are offering the exact same price (evens) about Man Utd regaining the trophy for a second year, this too is the best price anywhere.

The game itself is a real mouth watering prospect with what are undoubtedly the current two best teams in the World going head to head in one of football’s most famous venues, the Stadio Olimpico, Rome; the perfect stage for a match that has the potential to be a classic.  Both sides are packed with talent and all eyes will be on Ronaldo and Messi, the current number one two players in World football and either of them could be the difference in winning this game. However, with the likes of Rooney, Eto’o, Henry and Tevez amongst others involved, this game really is a star studded affair and very much capable of living up to its billing in the media as the ‘Hollywood Final’.

If you are looking for a tip for this game, it would have to be Manchester United to win at even money with Coral. The Reds are well experienced in these big games and last year’s victory over Chelsea in Moscow could well prove crucial if it turns out to be a close affair. We also feel that whilst both sides are packed with attacking players, it is United who have the better of the two defences and this is what could ultimately keep the Champions League trophy in the Old Trafford trophy cabinet. Also, don’t  be surprised to see this game go to penalties and 12/1  (Stan James) about Man Utd winnnig in a shoot out looks a cracking bet.

English Runner Favourite to End Irish Domination in 2000 Guineas Odds

April 28, 2009

English trained runner, Delegator, heads the bookmakers odds for Saturday’s 2000 Guineas at Newmarket and trainer Brian Meehan will be hoping that his entry can end a period of domination from the Irish in the race that has seen five of the last seven winners of this first classic of the Flat Racing season, come from across the Irish Sea.

Available at odds of 25/1 just a few weeks ago, Delgator’s odds soon began to contract when word emerged that he had wintered well at his trainer’s Wiltershire yard and was putting in some impressive pieces of work on the gallops. The double figure quotes soon disappeared after he won the Craven Stakes at Newmarket in April in impressive fashion, showing a great turn of foot to win in a manner that suggested there was more to come. It was also enough to see bookies install him at the 7/2 favourite for the Newmarker Classic on Saturday 2nd May, a price that is still available with most firms.

The biggest challenge to Delegator’s chances come in the shape of the Aidan O’Brien duo of Rip Van Winkle and Mastercraftsman who are both vying for second favoruite tag at odds of around 4/1. Neither have seen a racecourse since their two year old campaigns last season, but given they represent a trainer that has won this race a total of five times, including four of the last seven runnings they are both entitled to huge respect.

Evasive represents the next best chances of the English contingent and this Sir Michael Stoute runner is a best priced 10/1 chance with Coral and comes from a yard that has run this race a total of five times down the years.  Arazan, Sea the Stars and Intense Focus are three other well fancied Irish hopefuls and both represent Classic winning stables in  John Oxx and Jim Bolger respectively.

It is the Aidan O’Brien runner MasterCraftsman that posses the best two years old form of all the 2000 Guineas runners and providing he has trained on well from his Juvenile campaign, and there is no reason to believe he shouldn’t have, he is our tip to be the one to beat.

Man Utd v Arsenal Odds favour The Champions in Champions League Semi Final Clash

The odds for this game ahead of Tuesday night’s second leg see Manchester United as the clear favourites to be the first team to book their place in the final later this month. Bookmaker Boylesports are the best odds on United qualifying at 2/7 while Paddypower go the best price on Arsenal overcoming a one goal deficit to progress to the Rome Showpiece on 27th May.

The odds for 90 minutes play on Tuesday point towards a very close encounter with the home side the favoruites by the narrowest of margins at 6/4 and United are a shade bigger at 7/4 with Paddypower. The draw is chalked up at 23/10 with the Irish firm, a result that would favour the Reds whereas the Gunners must win if they are to progress. Equally, an away goal for United would make it an even bigger assignment for Wenger’s boys but one which many punters will think is achievable, especially with the talent in the Arsenal Squad.

The Odds for Wednesday night’s Champions League Semi Final first leg clash between Man Utd and Arsenal at Old Trafford suggest that bookmakers are expecting Manchester United will be taking the advantage to  next week’s return leg at The Emirates.

Ladbrokes are offering the best odds (10/11) about Man Utd beating Arsenal in a game that you would expect the home team need to win if they are to progress to their second successive Champions League final, which takes place in Rome at the end of next month. Coral are offering the best price around about the Gunners winning this game at 4/1,  but Arsene Wenger and his players will be fully aware that a draw (best price 5/2 with Boylesports) or even a one goal deficit will give them a great chance of making home advantage count on Tuesday 5th May, with an away goal a major boost if they can find the back of the United net.

Recent history and stats suggest that Man Utd are a value bet at 10/11 to win this game after United have won 5 of the last 6 meetings between the sides at Old Trafford. In the process, Fergie’s men have scored 11 goals to Arsenal’s three which would point towards a correct score bet of either 1-0 (best price 11/2 @ Victor Chandler) or 2-0 (with Ladbrokes). However, it must be remembered that there is a lot at stake in this game and it may be approached in a different way than a Premier League encounter. Arsenal are also the Premiership’s most inform, without a league defeat in 2009 and with several key players returning to fitness and form they could well get a result at Old Trafford.

Arsenal v Villareal Betting Too Close to Call but Gunners favourites to reach Semi Finals

April 7, 2009

Arsenal travel to Spain on Tuesday to take on Villareal in the first leg of their Champions League Quarter Final. The Gunners will be looking to avoid defeat and hopefully get an away goal at the El Madrigal but the Spaniards remain unbeaten at home in this season’s Champions League, a stat that removes any appeal in the best odds of 7/4 with Coral about the away win. However, Villareal have drawn two of their four Champions League fixtures at home and at 9/4 with Totesport the draw does not look out of the question.

If Arsenal want to gain the upper hand in this fixture, then scoring an away goal is of paramount importance and Arsene Wenger would surely be delighted with a 1-1 (11/2 at Boylesports) to take back to The Emirates.

It is Boylesports who also offer the best odds (1/2) on Arsenal qualifying for the Semi Finals where they would face the winners of the Manchester United v Porto game whilst Villareal are a 6/4 chance.
