Will on fire Wayne Rooney grab the Golden Shoe at the 2010 World Cup?

March 12, 2010

As we approach the halfway mark for the month of March it is now only just over 3 months to go until the football fans (soccer if you live in the USA) all over the world will phone in sick from work, cancel hospital appointments and just pop to the shops for 5 minutes and come back in July as the most anticipated event in football arrives in South Africa, by then the Premier League will have been won and instead of the normal void waiting for the August fixtures we can have something to look forward to again.

Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has been in terrific form of late and has seen his odds go from 14/1 to just 10/1 to be awarded the Adidas Golden Shoe this summer, his recent performance midweek against AC Milan saw him bag 2 more Champions League goals adding to his tally of 30 goals in all competitions up to March 12th this is compared to his closes rival the Valencia striker David Villa whose tally currently stands at just 20 goals, he is followed in third place by Liverpool striker Fernando Torres who is only 13 but this is down to Liverpool’s early exit in most competitions this season giving him less games.

If Rooney can go on to claim this award it will be the only the second time that an English player has won the award, the previous England winner was in 1986 when Gary Lineker bagged 6 goals in the campaign. Looking at the teams that England must face there are high hopes that this figure can be achieved by Rooney in just the group games as historically that is where the golden shoe winner will score their most goals.
