The countdown to Christmas has begun and whilst we’ll all be busy buying presents, decorating our homes and enjoying the merriment that the season of goodwill offers, the music industry is gearing up for the battle for the much coveted number one position in the charts and it is this year’s X Factor winner who bookmakers are predicting will be sitting ‘top of the pops’ come Christmas Day.
It is still unknown which of the remaining X Factor contestants will win the competition and subsequently release the single to challenge for the Christmas number one spot but with the last four Christmas chart toppers all X Factor winners, it is no surprise to see that the X Factor winner of 2009 is a 1/10 chance with Ladbrokes to have the biggest selling single of the festive period and follow in the footsteps of Shayne Ward, Leona Lewis and Alexandra Burke. If you think that a shock is on the cards, you can back any other song bar that of the winning X Factor singer to be number one with Boylesports at 6/1.
With the Christmas Number One a seemingly foregone conclusion, people who still want to have a flutter on what is one of the most popular novelty betting markets of the year can do so on one of the alternative Christmas Music markets on offer with the various bookies. The betting on which artist will chart highest without the X Factor winner included in the odds, i.e, the number two position, looks interesting with Susan Boyle currently heading that list at 15/8 with Bet365 but several other artists make plenty of appeal. Michael Jackson is sure to have plenty of people listening to his records as fans fondly remember the ‘King of Pop’ in the lead up to Christmas in the year of his death and he is an 8/1 chance. In the same vein, Boyzone fans are sure to be eager to remember Stephen Gately, who also passed away this year and the Irish signers are 14/1 to chart number two or better.
