The casting could be seen as a major gamble by the BBC and the bookmakers William Hill have released odds of 5/1 that the BBC will drop Matt Smith as the doctor after one series and odds of 1/9 that he will stay on to complete his second series.
The initial viewing figures of the first episode released by the BBC have confirmed that the episodes was watched by eight million viewers, the figures have matched those of the David Tennant’s debut episode of the doctor in 2006.
