Stewards Cup Betting Odds

July 31, 2009

The Stewards Cup is one of the most famous heritage handicaps of the Flat Racing season in the UK and is run on the Saturday and final day of the five day Glorious Goodwood meeting and is one of the busiest days of the year for bookmakers.

A six furlong sprint with a field of 28 runners, this famous race really is the definiton of  a ‘Cavalry Charge’ and is a punters paradise at 8/1 the field, offering plenty of opportunities to find some big price winners and each-way value and race sponsors, Bluesquare.com are offering 1/4 odds 1,2,3,4,5 for each way backers. Only three winners have won the race in the past 20 years and the shortest price of those was 6/1 so if you are lucky enough to find the winner, the chances are you’ll be cashing in!

Much is said about the draw bias in these big sprint races and Goodwood is no different, with horse drawn in the top half of the draw (14 or higher) winning 15 of the last 20 renewals of the Stewards Cup. The favourite for this year’s race, Markab, would have to defy that trend but not by much, as he comes from stall 13 and could easily join the favoured far side group. The Henry Candy trained runner is generally available at around an 8/1 chance with several bookmakers and looks well handicapped, as does the John Gosden trained Prohibit who wasn’t too far behind Markab in the Wokingham at Royal Ascot in June.

However, the answer to the Wokingham could lie with the John Gallagher trained Mac Gille Eoin who has been running well in handicaps all season, drawn in the middle in box 14, he will have the choice of which group to follow and could make his presence felt if repeating the form he showed at Epsom recently, a course not too dismiliar to Goodwood for its endulations  and at 16/1 looks a good each-way bet to make the frame with the sponsors.

Nassau Stakes Betting Headed by Cecil’s Midday

July 31, 2009

The Group One Nassau Stakes at Glorious Goodwood on Saturday is one of the feature races of the five day long meeting and oen of the top Fillies and Mares races of the Flat season over a distance of 1m 1f.

The Henry Cecil trained filly, Midday, is the favourite for the race at a best price of 3/1 with bookmakers Ladbrokes and Paddypower and whilst she has only won of of her three starts this season, the Oaks trial at Lingfield in May, this three year old’s second and third places in her two subsequent races (both behind superstar filly Sariska ) make her the one to beat. Rainbow View is second in the bookies lists but this John Gosden trained filly has been unable to recapture the form that saw her go unbeaten as a two year old but has not been disgraced in her defeats this term should once again have a win in her at this level.

The James Fanshawe trained Spacious could pose the biggest threat to the leading duo at the head of the betting and this four year old has run well in Group company this season, including a third in the Falmouth Stakes last time out and a win in the Windsor Forest stakes at Royal Ascot. A step up in trip may be what she need to bring about that elusive Group One success.

England’s betting odds for the 3rd test of the Ashes

July 28, 2009

England are set to take on Australia at Edgbaston on Thursday in the third test of The Ashes series, the game will start at 11:00am and run to Monday 3rd August and can be watched live on Sky Sports and via the red button on Freeview as well as audio on Radio 5 live.

A win at Edgebaston for England would make them the firm favourites to win the Ashes with a 2-0 lead and it could be decided at the end of the 4th test at Headingly. However the Australian team will be regrouping and know that a win for them at Edgebaston could turn things around for them and put the odds in their favour.

3rd Test Match Betting

Flintoff is expected to be fit for the game and the 115-run second hero has recovered well after his amazing time at Lord’s exploits and he is expected to test his knee at the nets on Tuesday. He has been receiving specialist treatment on his knee with a special compression machine.

Rip Van Winkle can take Sussex Stakes

July 28, 2009

Rip Van Winkle heads the bookmakers odds for the feature race of Day 2 of the 2009 Glorious Goodwood meeting, the Group  One Sussex Stakes. The Aidan O’Brien trained Colt goes in pursuit of his first victory in twelve months since his Juvenile campaign but has been running credibly in Group One company as a three year old and deserves his place at the top of the betting  – Stan James go best price at 13/8.

£25 Free Bet on the Sussex Stakes and Glorious Goodwood with Stan James

Dual Group One winner Ghanaati looks to be the biggest danger to Rip Van Winkle and is not too far behind the favourite in the bookies odds at a best price 9/4 with Paddy Power. The Barry Hills trained filly was an impressive winner of both the 1,000 Guineas and Coronation Stakes on her two latest starts and poses a big danger but whilst Rip Vank Winkle has yet to get off the mark this season, his efforts suggest he is better than this female rival. Whilst Paco Boy should not be dismissed now back over a mile.

Goodwood Sussex Stakes, 3:25 Wednesday 29th July – Live on Channel 4
Rip Van Winkle 13/8
Ghanaati 2/1
Paco Boy 3/1
Lord Shanakill 11/1
Beacon Lodge 16/1
Lahaleeb 25/1
Mias Boy 100/1

Glorious Goodwood Betting Tips – Tuesday 28th July

July 27, 2009

The Glorious Goodwood meeting gets underway on Tuesday and as always, this five day Racing festival promises to make fantastic watching for Racing fans, with several top class Group events on the cards, together with some great handicaps and with four races live on Channel 4 every day it is one of the biggest weeks of the year for business in the betting industry as punters get stuck in to the many Goodwood Betting Opportunities.

Three Group races are the feature of the opening day of the 2009 Goodwood meeting, with the Group Two Betfair Cup the pick of the bunch but the Group Three Gordon Stakes and Molecomb Stakes have also attracted some of the biggest names in Flat Racing to the West Sussex course.

In the Betfair Cup, the Sir Michael Stoute trained July Cup runner up, MAIN AIM, will be looking to go one better with this drop in class and step up to 7 furlongs, which looked like it was in need when running on at Newmarket earlier this month. He is generally around a 2/1 chance and should justify his short price at the expense of next in the market, South African runner, JJ the Jet Plane, who finished only 1/2 length behind Main Aim in the July Cup but the former did look the better prospect on that occasion. None of the others stand out on form and Main Aim is the selection for a stable clearly in excellent form following his dominance of the King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes on Saturday, where he trained the first three home.

In the 2:45 Betfair Gordon Stakes, former Aidan O’Brien runner, MASTEROFTHEHORSE, could be very difficult to beat on his first run for his new stable, the Debbie Mountain yard in Newmarket. His last two runs came in the English and Irish versions of the Derby, where he finished 3rd behind Sea the Stars and Fame and Glory at Epsom, form that could not read any better. His efforts in the Irish Derby weren’t to that shown at Epsom but he was caught speed on the soft ground and still finsihed a credible fourth. To win this race, he needs to reproduce the kind of form he has already proved he is capable of, whilst his rivals must all find something more than they have shown so far in their careers.

The Molecomb Stakes is the final live race of the day on Channel 4 and looks a fairly competitive affair with sevral holding seemingly very good chances. However, it will take a special horse to better the efforts of those produced by MONSIEUR CHEVALIER this season. The Richard Hannon trianed two year old has won five of his six starts in 2009 and has improved with every run. His only blemish came in the Norfolk Stakes at Royal Ascot when he was badly hampered in running and he put a line through that form when impressivley landing the Weatherby’s Super Sprint at Newbury last time out. Two year old races have always got to be appraoched with caution becuase many runner will still be improving, particularly at this level, but in Monsieur Chevalier, we could have a very smart horse and very much for the future.
