Grand National Fences Provide Ultimate Test When Betting at Aintree
March 30, 2009
Regarded worldwide as the toughest ever test for a racehorse, the Grand National is upon us again this year and if the betting is anything to go by we are in for a thrilling race on Saturday 4th April.
The winner however has a 4 mile course to run and will have to negotiate thirty fences, some of which border on the frightening. The race is run over two circuits at the Aintree racecourse with most of the fences having to be jumped twice.
We at Free Bets Blog have provided you with a useful guide to the Aintree fences that may help you understand the course a little better ahead of the race and finding that all important winner if you are having a bet.
View the latest Bookmakers Free Bets Offers for the 2009 Grand National.
Fence 1 & 17 – A thorn fence which stands 4 feet 7 high with a width of 2 feet 9. This is fence is sure to claim casualties, due in the main to the speed the field is travelling at when it reaches the fence, especially on the first time round.
Fence 2 & 18 – 4 feet 5 high but much wider than the first at 3 feet 6. Horses have usually begun to settle by the second fence but it is still capable of foxing one or two.
Fence 3 & 19 – Known as Westhead this is the first ditch that is 6 feet wide with the horses also having to clear a five foot high fence. Can often catch the horses out, but an experienced jockey will usually prepare the horse well before jumping.
Fence 4 & 20 – A plain fence just under 5 feet high and 3 feet wide; One of the easier fences on the course.
Fence 5 & 21 – 5 feet high and 3½ feet wide, jockeys will want to jump this with confidence as the next fence is the dreaded Bechers Brook.
Fence 6 & 22 – Bechers Brook is a fence with almost legendary status. The approach to Bechers is not particularly scary however it is the opposite side of the fence that always causes problems, due to its steep drop. The fence is just under 7 feet on the landing side, which means a drop of 2 feet from the take off side. This often shocks the horse, particularly as they have to take a sharp left hand turn on landing. Expect casualties here.
Fence 7 & 23 – The Foinavon fence is quite ordinary, 4 feet 6 high with a width of 3 feet but it was the scene of mayhem in 1967, when 100=1 shot, Foinavon was the only horse who managed to jump it following a pile up. He went on to win the race.
Fence 8 & 24 – The Canal Turn is another one that holds plenty of fear for horse and jockey’s. There is a canal in front of the horses when they land meaning that they have to jump it at a left diagonal towards the inside. It is a full 90 degree turn, which catches many out, particularly if several approach it together.
Fence 9 & 25 – Valentines Brook is the third of the better known fences that needs to be jumped in succession. It is 5 feet high and 3 feet 3 wide with a brook on the landing side that measures 5 feet 6. This is another fence that regularly claims casualties.
Fence 10 & 26 – A modest fence of 5 feet high and 3 feet wide.
Fence 11 & 27 – Known as the Booth which has a 6 foot ditch to clear before jumping the 5 feet high, 3 feet wide fence.
Fence 12 & 28 – Similar size to the previous fence but has a ditch on the landing side that often catches the horses out, particularly on the second circuit when the runners are getting tired.
Fences 13 & 29 – A modest fence of just over 4 feet 6 high and 3 feet wide.
Fences 14 & 30 – The final fence of the National which is also a modest 4 feet 6 high and 3 feet wide. Despite being the final fence it rarely takes casualties.
Fence 15 – The Chair is the highest on the course at 5 feet 3 feet and is also the widest at 6 feet. To make it even more difficult the horses have to jump a 6 feet wide ditch on the take off side. The Chair is only one of two fences that is only jumped once.
Fence 16 – Is the Water Jump and is the final fence on the first circuit.
When you assess the various fences that each of the forty runners must navigate in order to win the race, you soon appreciate that your selection must be a sound jumper in order to stand any chance of just making it around the race to the finsihing line, let alone be the first past the post.
